Home on the Peene
They really do exist, these special places. Gutshaus Stolpe near Anklam in north-east Western Pomerania is just that, a discovery. The historic estate lies between fields and avenues, nestled in an extensive park directly on the banks of the River Peene. Opposite the village church, a high wall provides access to the family-run hotel. To the left and right of the cobbled driveway, old stables and farm buildings line the path that leads straight to the manor house: Welcome to Gut Stolpe.
During the turmoil of the Second World War, the owner family Stürken had to flee Stolpe. After reunification, the second youngest son Kurt Stürken bought back his parents' estate, including the land, and started the hotel project. He gradually restored the manor house, the coach house and the former stables. Today, couples tie the knot where his father once hitched up their horses. In the meantime, the Hamburg entrepreneur has passed the baton to his children Franziska and Moritz Stürken, who have taken the hideaway on the Peene under their wing with a loving eye for the property. In the summer of 2024, they handed over the management of the house to Bryan Johnston, who has declared the Stolpe manor house to be a project close to his heart.
While strolling through the estate, guests will come across historical witnesses such as the remains of the first Benedictine monastery in Western Pomerania from the 12th century and the Stolper Fährkrug, which was built from the stones of the burnt-down monastery.
Stolpe's overnight guests can choose from 36 stylishly designed rooms and suites in three categories; two spacious holiday flats are also available. Gourmets are attracted to the restaurant in the manor house, where regionally orientated gourmet cuisine is served. The bar, the wine cellar and the rustic Fährkrug are also worth a visit.
Despite the beauty of this uniquely renovated and restored estate, the biggest attraction of Gutshaus Stolpe is the surrounding nature. Because it is breathtaking: the Peene changes over a length of around 80 kilometres from Lake Kummerow to its mouth in the Peene River. The unique landscape is characterised by spring moors, oxbow lakes, swamp forests and wet meadows, which can be explored with trained guides. And then it's back to Stolpe, your home on the Peene.
